Coming in 2008: MAPS Red Pen Tool

March 2008

The new MAPS Red Pen tool is designed to address each of the following issues in assessing student work online:

  • Viewing digital documents usually requires the assessor to have the original applications on which the document was created in order to view the document. This means ensuring that everybody in the assessment process has those same tools installed on the machines from where they will do their assessment work.
  • Downloading large document often means that there is a significant pause whilst assessors before marking can take place.
  • Annotation: on paper every teacher is used to making notes in margins, highlighting and indicating where marks have been allocated. Not so easy on screen!
  • Preserving the original work: when digital documents are annotated ordinarily the document itself is changed making it difficult to see what has been written by the student and what has been written by the student.

The new MAPS Red Pen Tool will address these problems in the following ways:

  • All documents can be viewed using a standard flash plug-in. No need for expensive software installs across lots of machines!
  • Documents are streamed to the assessor one page at a time - meaning that you can get on with your assessment work straight away!
  • Annotations are now layered on top of the document meaning that the original document is preserved. Annotation tools include a highlighter, as well short and long notes. Moreover, different assessors have different layers of comments all of which can be stripped away as required!
